Wimbledon 2016: Federer rallies to beat Cilic in 3rd round
Serena Williams is through to her first WTA final since 2013.
Federer, however, had to push his way through a weary Cilic to win his 6th Slam title of the season
Serena Williams was through in her first WTA final since 2013, when she knocked out Serena Koltova in the second round.
Williams will play the last four days for the title against Jelena Ostapenko.
The 32 year-old American is seeking a third Grand Slam victory, having won the US Open and the French Open in 2016 and 2014.
Wimbledon has been the hardest part about being pregnant.
“It’s been a really tough five years,” Williams said on Monday. “I’ve had to fight to see the big moments and win some close matches.”
Williams has beaten the Czech in all four of their meetings at Flushing Meadows, but she has struggled in the final in each of the previous three years.
Cilic, the 2017 French Open champion, was on his heels all day as he battled rain. His forehand gave him the match with a forehand down the line that Williams missed as she made a break in the third set.
There have been no complaints from Williams about the conditions, though.
“I don’t think I need to speak at all because the rain is not helping our game at all. We just have to keep going until the rain breaks,” said Williams. “We need the weather because I think the weather can make or break a match.”
The British number one faced a huge challenge in the final against Venus Williams in this year?s US Open.
Williams came out strong to take the opening set. But Venus then pulled away in the second set to wrap up the win.
